Artificial intelligence is changing the world at a pace few technologies ever have. Almost every week, we see a new breakthrough that pushes the boundaries of what machines can do. It is helping scientists accelerate research, enabling developers to build software faster, strengthening cybersecurity, improving healthcare, automating business operations, and giving entrepreneurs the ability to build products with resources that would have seemed impossible just a few years ago.
But when I look at how most people interact with AI today, I cannot help feeling that we are missing the bigger picture.
Millions of people use AI to generate portraits of themselves, create funny videos, produce memes, imitate celebrities, or join the latest trend on social media. Every day, timelines are filled with AI-generated content that exists mainly to entertain, attract attention, or satisfy curiosity.
There is nothing wrong with that. Entertainment has always been part of how people embrace new technology. We experiment with it, we play with it, and we discover what it can do.
What concerns me is not that people use AI for entertainment. It is that entertainment has become the conversation, while productivity, innovation, and problem-solving often remain in the background.
That feels like using one of the most powerful technologies ever created for only a fraction of what it is capable of.
Beyond the Novelty
The most visible use of AI is not always its most valuable use.
Social media has introduced AI to millions of people through image generators, chatbots, and video creation tools. Those experiences are exciting because they are immediate. They produce something we can see and share within seconds.
The real strength of artificial intelligence is different.
It helps researchers analyse enormous amounts of data in minutes instead of months. It assists engineers in solving complex problems. It helps software developers spend less time on repetitive tasks and more time building meaningful solutions. It enables businesses to automate workflows, improve customer experiences, and make better decisions based on data.
These applications rarely become viral videos, yet they are quietly changing industries around the world.
The Difference Between Visibility and Value
History rarely remembers technologies because they entertained us.
It remembers them because they changed the way we lived and worked.
Electricity did not transform society because people found new ways to have fun. It transformed society because it powered homes, hospitals, factories, schools, and entire economies.
The internet was not created so people could scroll endlessly through social media. It became one of the greatest inventions in history because it connected knowledge, businesses, researchers, governments, and billions of people across the world.
Smartphones followed the same path. They started as communication devices. Today they are offices, classrooms, banks, navigation systems, cameras, and business tools that fit into our pockets.
Artificial intelligence is following a similar journey.
Today, many people know AI because of the images it creates or the conversations it can have. Years from now, I believe it will be remembered for something much greater. It will be remembered for helping humanity solve problems that once seemed impossible.
AI Is a Productivity Multiplier
One of the reasons I find AI so fascinating is that it amplifies human capability.
A researcher can analyse years of information in hours.
A software engineer can build and test applications more efficiently.
A small business owner can automate customer support, marketing, scheduling, and operations without employing a large team.
A teacher can prepare learning materials that meet different students where they are.
A photographer can spend less time on repetitive editing and more time creating meaningful work for clients.
An entrepreneur can validate an idea, build a prototype, write documentation, and launch a business faster than ever before.
None of these examples replace human intelligence.
They give people more time to think, create, innovate, and solve problems that require judgment, experience, and imagination.
That is where I believe AI creates its greatest value.
The Question We Should Be Asking
Most conversations about AI begin with a simple question.
“What can AI generate?”
I think there is a better question.
“What can AI help us accomplish?”
That small shift changes the entire conversation.
Instead of asking AI to entertain us for a few moments, we begin asking how it can help us improve education, strengthen healthcare, make businesses more productive, support scientific discovery, protect digital systems, or create opportunities that did not exist before.
Those are the questions that will shape the future of artificial intelligence.
My Perspective
I do not believe the legacy of artificial intelligence will be measured by the billions of portraits it generates or the number of viral videos it helps create.
Its real legacy will be measured by the businesses it helps build, the discoveries it makes possible, the industries it transforms, the opportunities it creates, and the problems it helps humanity solve.
Entertainment is part of AI’s story, but it should never become the whole story.
Every generation is remembered for how it chooses to use the technologies available to it.
We have been given one of the most powerful tools in modern history.
The question is not whether AI can create impressive images or amusing videos. We already know it can.
The real question is whether we will use this extraordinary technology simply to capture attention, or whether we will use it to create lasting value.
I believe history will remember those who chose the latter.
